제 이름은 김소희…

I met with my language partner today and somehow we ended up talking about Korean names. I told her that I had gotten better at telling whether a Korean name belongs to a man or a woman but that I still make mistakes from time to time. That led us to the pronunciation of my name (Sofie) in Korean.

Until now I’ve transcribed my name as 소피, simply because I know that “f” is usually written with a “ㅍ”. I never liked it too much – also because the Korean word 피 means “blood”. Anyway, my sweet LP told me that I should call myself 소희 instead, as this sounds almost like my name and is a real Korean name unlike the awkward sounding 소피. I was of course super happy about this, and I’m sure this name should come in handy during my next visit to Korea. As an added bonus, I can actually add my husband’s Korean last name to it and proudly introduce myself:

안녕하세요. 저는 김소희라고 합니다. ^^

On an unrelated note I received my “Korean Grammar in Use – Intermediate” from TwoChois yesterday. I’ll be sure to post a review when I’ve had the time to look through it.

Now it’s time to study with the last of Tuesday’s three news articles from TTMIK so I can be ready for the next news delivery tomorrow. It’s a good thing that Easter break is only one day away. I can’t wait to have a whole week off work so I can immerse myself completely in my Korean studies!

Congratulations on the name 🙂
Several of my language partners have encouraged me to find a Korean name, but there is no natural match for my actual name, and I find it difficult to randomly name myself something completely different.

I love your Korean name! Reminds me of Wonder Girls ❤ hehe! I wish I could do the same for my name but Kirsten cannot in anyway be turned into a Korean name ㅋㅋㅋ so I made one up xD

  Hehe, that’s exactly what my language partner said when she suggested the name ㅋㅋ. Thanks for stopping by my blog. It’s still quite new but I’m having so much fun with it, and I love to share my Korean experiences with others. Obviously I’m a big fan of yours, and I think it’s so cool that you’ve now taken on Japanese studies as well! ^^
