When being in a city like Seoul one must take advantage of some of the cultural offers that a big city has to offer. There are always a ton of plays, concerts, and musicals and it can be hard to pick which one to go to.

Last Friday I went with my friend Nicky to see Aida, a modern musical version of the classic opera with music by Elton John. I’ve seen several plays and musicals in Korea, mostly around Daehangno and once in Sejong Center of Performing arts. This time was my first time going to the Blue Square theater near Hangangjin station in Itaewon.

Nicky and I hadn’t seen each other in about a year so it was great to have a chance to reconnect and share an experience.

The show tells the tragic lovestory between the Nubian princess, Aida, who’s captured by the Egyptian captain Ramades during an invasion and appointed as maid to the captain’s fiancee – the Pharao’s daughter Amneris. While working in the palace, Aida and Ramades fall madly in love and must try to hide their true feelings, knowing that it will have fatal consequences if they are revealed. Naturally this romance is bound to end in tragedy but it was still a heartwarming experience and the actors were amazing.

In case you were wondering what this musical sounds like in Korean I’ll link a few of the officially released videos here below.

With that, I’ll sign off for 2019 and wish you all a healthy and prosperous 2020! 새해 복 많이 받으세요~!

The opening number of Aida. Every story is a love story.
Ramades declares his undying love for Aida.
From 06:55 is “Written in the stars”, where Aida tells Ramades that they can never meet again.
