I remember once reading in a teen magazine “one of the greatest things about being a girl is that you rarely get so depressed that new clothes, new shoes, or new makeup can’t cheer you up”. Since you all know from my twitter feed that I was less than happy about the events that unfolded in the US a couple of days ago, I really needed a pick me up. Initially, I wanted to just drown my depression in the cheapest soju available, but since I had classes in the morning, I decided that it would probably not be the wisest choice I could make.
Instead I went strolling around the small streets aroud Edae (Edae is an abbreviation for Ehwa Womens’ university) and tried lifting my mood with a new pair of ballerina shoes, a pair of winter boots, a couple of cute sweaters, a new belt, a pair of gloves, and a gorgeous A-line skirt. It sounds like a crazy shopping spree, (it was!), but I was as depressed as I haven’t been in a long time. The good news is that I probably paid less than 100 dollars in total for all of it.
For people unfamiliar with Edae, it’s really a shopping paradise for anyone looking to find the latest (and cutest) Korean fashion at bargain prices. There are just so many lovely pieces at 5000 and 10000 won (like 5 and 10 dollars), and the quality is surprisingly good.
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely don’t believe that what happened on Wednesday can be cured with just shopping, but I had to do what I could to numb the pain, and it was down to either going shopping or having to teach Thursday morning with a major hangover. I’m still in shock at what happened, and all the time I keep hoping that it’s a nightmare that we’re all going to wake up from soon. While we lick our wounds and brace for a period of God knows what, here’s a Big Bang song to start the weekend with.
