This time I’m going about my Korean drama watching in a new way. I’m currently half-way through the classic “여름향기”, my last drama with 송승헌 before I’ll be able to cross “Watch every drama 승헌 오빠 ever starred in” off my Korean learning bucket list. For those of you who may question my motives; yes, I’m doing this entirely with an educational purpose in mind 😉 which is why I make sure to watch every episode twice this time. I find that this method comes with several bonuses: The drama lasts longer, I double 오빠’s screen time, and I can watch an episode both with and without subtitles for optimal listening comprehension.
While listening carefully to the dialogue I noticed a new sentence ending occuring when the main characters speak informally to each other: “…지 뭐”. I don’t recall having encountered this structure before so I did some research on this ending, which seemed to appear in every other sentence once I first started paying attention. So, here’s what I found out: Apparently this informal ending conveys a nuance of “you know” or “what else”. In this drama they particularly seem to use it as a fixed expression like 그렇지 뭐, meaning something like “it’s just like that – no more, no less” or “so be it”.
